I am researching ferries as a third leg of colonial transport infrastructure in the Gold Coast/Ghana. Ferries that run on water bodies in the interior of the Gold Coast served as vessels of extending as well as resistance to colonial rule; and economic inclusion and means of seeking political legitimacy. Therefore, I situate ferries at the center of colonial infrastructure of the Gold Coast to argue that ferries were integral to both economics and politics of the Gold Coast even in the immediate post-independent period.
