Nhadya Lawes

is an interdisciplinary scholar and arts professional. A University of Miami graduate with a Bachelor’s in English Literature and minors in Sociology, Art History and Africana Studies, she remains involved as an alumni member of the Center for Global Black Studies’ Advisory Council. At the University of Miami, Nhadya curated projects including the student photography exhibition In Our Glory / A Different Image for the Creative Studio Gallery at UM Libraries, a showcase for the Center for Global Black Studies offices, and RELAX RELATE RELEASE, an on-campus artmaking collaboration with artist Stephanie J. Woods. Currently the Associate for the Arts program at the Knight Foundation, she supports grantmaking to build better informed and engaged communities through digital transformation in arts and culture. Prior to Knight, Nhadya interned at several arts organizations including the Lowe Art Museum, Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora (Miami MoCAAD), Perez Art Museum, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and The Studio Museum in Harlem. Born and raised in east Pembroke Pines/Miramar to Jamaican immigrants, she is a champion for arts of social practice and placemaking.
